Healing Power of Intention

Traditional Chinese Medicine is often described as half Eastern medical system and half healing art. As such, its energetic therapeutic effect helps to re-align the mind-body-spirit axis. Moreover, this distinctive characteristic becomes the foundational piece of Chinese medicine which sets it apart from conventional biomedicine. Energetic medicine can be opaque and difficult to unpack. But if we dig deeper to look under the hood, intention is the essence of its healing power. Intention is the act of aiming with the belief and confidence that the end goal will be reached. Belief is very important in one’s healing journey. It’s like when you’re riding a horse and you want it to go to the left, you look to the left first and then pull the horse’s head. As a human being it is the same thing: wherever you put your attention is probably where you are going to find yourself. As the Chinese Medicine saying goes: where the mind goes, the Chi follows.

Recently in my clinic, a patient showed up very depleted and despondent. Aside from suffering from Chi and Blood deficiency, her Spirit was clearly deflated from her depleted state. What she needed in that moment was to get fed both physically and spiritually. So while she was on the table, I shopped for the ingredients necessary for her to make homemade chicken soup. My message was simple yet powerful: We’re going to get you out of this negative spiral, fill you up with nutrients and love, so you can get past this roadblock in your healing journey. With a little nudge, she restored belief in herself.

Today, we live in a world of artificial intelligence and robotics. While the usefulness of machines cannot be refuted, the human touch provided by traditional medicine is irreplaceable. Sometimes a simple act of kindness pay enormous dividends. As my meditation teacher likes to say: sometimes the best sandwich is the simplest sandwich.
