THE WAY CHRIS WORKS AS A LICENSED ACUPUNCTURIST: OLD SCHOOL TRADITIONIST IN MODERN TIMES

Typically, when someone hears about Chinese medicine, acupuncture is what comes to mind. As powerful a holistic healing tool as acupuncture is, I consider Chinese herbology as the gem of the medicine. Recently, with plant medicine being all the rage, my unswerving belief doesn’t seem so far fetched.

I was born in Hong Kong and lived there until I was eleven. Etched in the memory of my early childhood is my mom taking me to see the Chinese doctor whenever I got sick. To this day, I can vividly see the forty odd patients waiting impatiently to see this master herbalist in the smoke-filled room ( he was a chain smoker!!! ). After a good part of the day had passed, finally it came my turn. He took my pulse and scrutinized my tongue all the while puffing away. He would carefully scribble down the herbal prescription deep in thought and shouted out all these dietary restrictions ( NO orange, ice cream, chicken!!! ). I listened alright, I had waited all day, this was all business.

Chinese medicine pays a lot of attention to the connection between what exists on the inside and outside. Acupuncture is a wonderful modality to re-align the exterior portion of the body, moving chi and blood on a superficial level. Chinese herbs, on the other hand, have the function to target specific visceral organs in order to harmonize what is out of balance internally. For thousands of years, Traditional Chinese Medicine has been used to address acute pain, internal maladies, and infectious diseases. I’m not here to re-invent the wheel. I’m simply here to carry on this time-honored healing tradition. I guess I am a traditionalist, never deviating far from the fundamentals handed down through the ages.
