In my practice, I’ve observed a growing interest among female patients seeking Chinese medicine dietary guidelines for cycle syncing eating specific foods to better balance each distinct phase of the menstrual cycle and support natural hormone balancing.
While Western medicine focuses on hormonal fluctuations taking place during the cycle, Chinese medicine adopts a more nuanced approach, paying attention to the energetics predominant during these four distinct stages ( Yin/Cold, Yang/Hot, Qi and Blood ). Think of it like the four seasons: each season is defined by its own characteristics, so we want to eat the appropriate foods in order to sync up energetically with the cycle of nature.
The four phases are as follows:
1. Menstrual/bleeding phase: Chinese medicine calls this the peak Yin/Cold phase due to loss of blood. This is the time to replenish blood by consuming iron-rich foods like leafy greens and red meat. Other protein-rich foods such as eggs, fish, and beans are beneficial as well. Warming spices like ginger and cinnamon can alleviate cramps. The superfood here is beets, known as the “ period tonic. “ Avoid cold foods ( raw vegetables and fruits, as well as iced drinks and ice cream ).
2. Follicular phase: This is a continuation of the Yin Cooling phase, though the cold is not as extreme as the menstrual phase. This is the time to continue building blood by eating a healthy diet of animal protein and cooked leafy greens to re-mineralize the body after bleeding. Focus on boosting iron with spinach, avocado, dates, figs, carrots, and sweet potatoes. The superfood here is goji berries, also known as wolfberries.
3. Ovulation phase: Yin/Cold energy transforming into dynamic Yang/Hot energy. Ovulation is the best time to turn up the heat because this is the time when you are most fertile. This is the time to eat plenty of warm and spicy foods such as ginger, pepper, and cinnamon. The onion family ( chives, scallions, onions, and leeks ) is also beneficial. Lamb and chicken are great sources of animal protein. Avoid cold foods like raw salads and fruits. Vegetables should be lightly steamed. The superfood here is cinnamon.
4. Luteal phase: This is a continuation of the Yang/Hot energy phase, though the heat is not as extreme as the ovulation phase. This is the time to continue nourishing and supporting the hormone progesterone. Focus on essential fatty acids, which can be found in flaxseeds, chia seeds, sesame seeds, and pumpkin seeds. The superfood here is bone broth, which is high in essential fats and should be consumed daily to support hormonal balance. Avoid alcohol and caffeine.
This traditional approach to cycle syncing and hormone balancing can be helpful whether you’re looking to support fertility or simply achieve a more balanced and comfortable menstrual cycle. I’m happy to address more specific questions you may have.
